Washington's E-Cycle law — the short version
Washington was one of the first states in the country to pass a mandatory electronics recycling program. Under E-Cycle Washington (RCW 70A.500), manufacturers pay for the recycling of covered electronics — TVs, computer monitors, desktops, laptops, and portable DVD players — so residents, small businesses, charities, school districts, and small governments can recycle them at no direct charge through authorized collection sites. It exists because these devices contain valuable recoverable materials (steel, aluminum, copper, precious metals) alongside genuinely hazardous ones (lead in CRT glass, mercury in some backlights, brominated flame retardants in plastics). Landfilling them is bad environmentally and, in Washington, illegal.
What that means for you
If you have the time and a truck, covered electronics can be dropped for free at E-Cycle Washington authorized collectors in Pierce County. What you're paying us for is the pickup — we carry the old CRT down the basement stairs, load it, and get it to the right facility so you don't spend a Saturday wrestling with a 100-pound TV that your car won't fit. For a single item that's easy for you to move, dropping it off yourself is genuinely a good option. For anything that's heavy, awkward, upstairs, or part of a bigger load — that's where we're the better call.
CRTs, rear-projection TVs, and old monitors
The heaviest e-waste we haul is legacy display equipment: cathode-ray-tube (CRT) televisions and monitors, and rear-projection "big screen" TVs from the early 2000s. A 32-inch CRT can weigh 100 pounds. A 55-inch rear-projection unit tops 200 pounds and doesn't fit through most doorways without an angle. Both contain leaded glass and have to go to specialized processors — they absolutely should not end up at a metal-recycling drop or a general transfer station. Office and business e-waste
Office cleanouts often include stacks of aging monitors, retired workstations, printers, phones, and networking gear. All of that flows through the same certified-recycler channels as household e-waste, but the volume math is different — we quote office e-waste by the pallet-load or truck-load as part of a broader commercial junk removal job.
